Aderholt to host ceremony honoring Vietnam veterans at UNA

FLORENCE  — Originally scheduled for the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia, overwhelming interest in a 50th anniversary Vietnam Veteran pinning ceremony this month, has led organizers to move the event to the University of North Alabama, U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt’s office announced.

“Because of the incredible response we’ve received, we needed a larger space to properly recognize these heroes in a respectful and comfortable setting,” Aderholt (R-Haleyville) said in a news release. “We are deeply grateful for their service, and I look forward to seeing so many veterans and their loved ones in Florence.”

Aderholt said more than 200 people are scheduled to attend the Shoals-area event on Aug. 22.

“It’s great that Congressman Aderholt is giving Vietnam veterans the recognition they didn’t receive during their generation,” said UNA’s Jimmy Roberts, coordinator for Military Veterans Affairs and an Iraq veteran. “Welcome home, Vietnam veterans.”

The events are part of a Vietnam War Commemoration effort to give long-overdue recognition to those who served during the Vietnam War era.

“These men and women served our nation with courage during a difficult chapter in our history, and many never received the recognition they so rightfully deserved when they returned home,” Aderholt said. “These ceremonies are a small but heartfelt way to say thank you on behalf of a grateful nation.”

The ceremonies are part of Aderholt’s effort to recognize and honor Vietnam-era veterans with official commemorative pins in appreciation for their service and sacrifice, his office said.
