Alabama A&M launches 150th anniversary Torch Bearer Campaign

NORMAL — As Alabama A&M University approaches its milestone 150th Anniversary in 2025, the University launched its Torch Bearer Campaign – an ambitious initiative aimed at raising $15 million in individual gifts over the next year.

The series of Torch Bearer events will bring alumni, supporters, and community leaders together to raise funds through December 2025.

The inaugural reception, graciously hosted by Dr. Dorothy W. Huston, retired vice president for Research and Development, raised $50,000. Guests included 150th Anniversary Campaign Chairman Robert Holmes and State Reps. Laura Hall and Anthony Daniels.

“We want $15 million to come from alumni,” said AAMU President Daniel K. Wims. “The university will engage more than 10,000 alumni to reach that goal.

“We want to show that our alumni support at the same level as any leading institution.”

The Torch Bearer Campaign invites alumni and friends of AAMU to host or participate in fundraising receptions and events, each with a minimum goal of $25,000. By becoming a Torch Bearer, supporters foster stronger connections between alumni and the university while advancing its mission of excellence. Upcoming Torch Bearer Campaign stops include Los Angeles, Atlanta, Phoenix, and New York City.

Funds raised during the campaign will enable critical investments in campus improvements, STEM infrastructure, and scholarships. The Torch Bearer fundraisers will support the broader 150th Anniversary Campaign which will raise $150 million in total. For information about the campaign’s key priorities, visit www.aamu.edu/150.

“This campaign will not only honor our rich history, but also position Alabama A&M as a leading institution for innovation, community engagement, and student success,” said Holmes.

The year-long 150th Anniversary Campaign will culminate in a grand commemoration during Homecoming 2025, with the ceremonial lighting of the William Hooper Councill Eternal Flame for the next 150 years.
