ATHENS — Motorists in Limestone County should expect lane closures and lengthy delays over the next several weeks.
Road crews will begin resurfacing projects Monday on Alabama Highway 251 between U.S. 31 in Athens and Highway 53 in Ardmore.
According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, workers with Asphalt Paving Systems will resurface the entire highway — more than 16 miles — in two projects.
The first project runs from U.S. 31 in Athens to East Limestone Road, and the second will proceed from East Limestone Road to Highway 53 in Ardmore. The total cost of the projects is about $2.5 million. ALDOT anticipates completion of both projects this fall.
Milling operations on the segment near U.S. 31 will take place during the first week. Work will start after 8 a.m. to reduce impact to school traffic.
Motorists should expect single-lane closures with traffic directed by flaggers or pilot car. Please be aware that delays may be lengthy at times during resurfacing. ALDOT advises drivers to plan additional travel time or use alternate routes.
