DECATUR — A memorable evening of culture, community, and celebration are in store Saturday for the third annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration in downtown Decatur.

The immersive cultural experience is a collaborative effort involving the Hispanic community, the Alabama Center for the Arts, the city of Decatur, the Princess Theater, and civic and cultural organizations in the Decatur/Morgan County area.

Dia de Los Muertos, or “The Day of The Dead,” honors the lives of those who have passed and has gained popularity across Latin America and the United States, especially after being featured in the Disney film “Coco.” To kick off Saturday’s festivities, there will be a free screening of “Coco” at The Princess Theater at 10 a.m.

At the top of the steps of the Alabama Center for the Arts, 15 students from the Decatur, Athens and Morgan County school systems will compete for the title of queen in the Quinceañera pageant, showcasing their grace, culture, and spirit.

The Alabama Center for the Arts will also host “Un Altar De La Comunidad,” a community altar where attendees can contribute tributes to their departed loved ones. The pageant begins at 2 p.m.

The main event will take place on 2nd Avenue from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Downtown Decatur will come alive with music, food trucks, vendors, art activities provided by The Carnegie, and a “Community Corner” for local organizations.

The Chinelos dancers take the stage at 5 p.m., followed by the band Grupo 100. A dance competition will begin at 7:45; registration is available on-site.

There is also a must-see surprise in store that you won’t want to miss once the sun sets.
