Answer the call: Huntsville seeks police dispatchers

HUNTSVILLE – Wanted by police: A good ear for listening, typing skills and composure, among other traits.

The Huntsville Police Department is seeking anyone who are interested in a fast-paced and rewarding career serving the community as a police dispatcher. HPD’s communication division is now hiring for the position.

According to a HPD news release, the department employs a team of highly motivated individuals who are often the department’s first line of communication with the public during an emergency.

“Dispatchers are first responders, just like police officers, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters and more,” Huntsville Police Sgt. Dana Springfield said. “The role of dispatcher is crucial and requires efficiency, composure, compassion and discretion.”

Primary responsibilities include fast and efficient work in receiving, dispatching and processing calls to appropriate emergency personnel.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • At least 18 years old
  • High school diploma/ GED
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Type at least 30 words per minute

An offer of employment is also contingent on the candidate passing an interview, aptitude test (typing and listening), drug screen and polygraph test.

Starting pay is $45,240 annually, making it one of the highest paid public safety dispatcher positions in the state.
