ATHENS — Athens State University is the home of a cutting-edge cybersecurity lab that will focus on preparing the next generation of cybersecurity experts to take on America’s  challenges and threats.

The state-of-the-art facility in Waters Hall was largely funded by a $250,000 grant from the state Legislature.

“The lab will provide students and faculty a secure and isolated environment where they may safely employ cybersecurity tools, preventing interaction with systems external to those installed in the lab,” said Dr. Adam Lewis, associate professor of computer science and program coordinator for computer science and information technology. “Students will engage in cybersecurity exercises, such Red Team-Blue Team cyberwarfare mock drills, among many more exciting experiments.”

The lab is equipped with the latest tools and technologies, offering students hands-on experience in areas such as ethical hacking, digital forensics, network security, and cyber threat analysis.

“The acquisition of the new Athens State CyberLab exceedingly elates the faculty of the Mathematical, Computer, and Natural Sciences Department (MCNS),” said department Chair Dr. Ronald Merritt. “The CyberLab is part of Athens State University’s broader initiative to expand its STEM offerings and provide students with the education and training necessary to succeed in high-demand fields.

“With the opening of this lab, the university reaffirms its commitment to fostering innovation, supporting economic growth, and preparing students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.”

Athens State has also established Learning Partnerships with Huntsville cybersecurity companies such as Torch and COLSA, and engages in industry partnerships through the Program Advisory Board.

Additionally, the lab will serve as a hub for research and collaboration, bringing together students, faculty, and industry professionals to search for solutions to cybersecurity issues, the university said.
