HUNTSVILLE — Things are really taking off at Huntsville International Airport.

And just in time for the winter.

At 3:14 p.m. Wednesday, just a day after announcing the Allegiant Air’s flights to Gulf Shores – Alabama’s only intra-state commercial nonstop route, Allegiant Flight 3471 taxied under a water cannon salute, then took off for Fort Lauderdale on an inaugural flight as a part of the carrier’s increased nonstop service with Huntsville.

“There is huge demand for leisure travel in our market, and Allegiant has recognized the opportunity here by bringing three popular Florida vacation destinations closer with nonstop flights right from Huntsville to St. Pete/Clearwater, Sanford/Orlando and Fort Lauderdale,” Airport CEO Butch Roberts said at a news conference in August announcing the service to Florida. “They are an award-winning airline, and our airport has three times been voted the best small airport in the U.S.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to share this exciting news with our community.”
