HUNTSVILLE – It was an era of music that was defined by rebellion and fashion. And an exhibition reflecting those times is coming to the “Rock-it City” this weekend.
“Days of Punk: Photographs by Michael Grecco” will be showcased at the Huntsville Museum of Art starting Friday and running through Feb. 1, the museum announced.
The exhibition features more than 100 striking images by Grecco, a photographer and filmmaker who captured the energy, defiance, and lasting influence of the punk rock movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
“Michael Grecco’s work immerses visitors in a moment when music, fashion, and attitude collided to create a movement that continues to inspire generations,” said Christopher Madkour, executive director of the Huntsville Museum of Art. “We are excited to share this trailblazing exhibition with our community.”
Grecco, who was embedded in the underground scenes of New York and Boston, documented legendary figures such as Adam Ant, Billy Idol, The Clash, Joan Jett, and Johnny Rotten. His photographs reveal the unfiltered personalities and rebellious spirit that defined punk’s cultural legacy.
“When I walked into my first punk club in Boston at age 18, I found myself in a world where everyone belonged,” he said. “Punk was bold, self-expressed, and free. It gave me permission to be myself. From 1978 to 1986, I captured its stars on stage, behind the curtain, and on the streets.
“The spirit of punk was extraordinary, and I hope these images let others feel its infectious freedom.”
As part of the exhibition, Grecco will visit Huntsville to deliver an artist’s talk Nov. 6, relating his experiences capturing some of punk’s most iconic and legendary figures.
