HUNTSVLLE – About 66 million years ago, an asteroid crashed into the Earth, causing the extinction of dinosaurs on the planet.
Today and Friday, dinosaurs will be roaming through U.S. Space & Rocket Center on a two-day event that is, coincidentally, all about asteroids.
Jurassic Quest personalities Dino Dustin and Park Ranger Marty, baby dinosaur Tyson the T-rex and walking Raptor Jojo the Utahraptor will take over the weekly Biergarten tonight.
For the prehistoric occasion, there will be a specially themed menu featuring Brontosaurus Brats, Stegosaurus Schnitzel, and Prehistoric Pretzels. Biergarten hours are 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. A portion of the proceeds benefits the United States Army Association, this week’s charity partner.
They’ll be back Friday for International Asteroid Day, an annual day devoted to asteroid awareness. Tyson the T-rex and Raptor JoJo will roam the museum to entertain visitors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The museum education team also has hands-on dinosaur and asteroid activities from designing a space suit for your favorite space-traveling dinosaur to exploring how comets and asteroids and plate tectonics have shaped our planet over time.
To top off the week, Friday’s Cocktails & Cosmos in the Intuitive Planetarium also exams asteroids, and how these are remnants from the formation of our solar system. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., and the show starts at 7.
