New Market, Russellville couples honored as ALFA Young Farm Families

Seth and Kaylee Hubert of Madison County were named Fruit & Vegetable Division winners in the Alabama Farmers Federation 2024 Outstanding Young Farm Family (OYFF) contest during the organization’s Young Farmers Conference Gulf Shores Feb. 10. The statewide contest is for farmers ages 18-35 who receive most of their income from production agriculture. It measures success based on farm growth and diversification, Farm Bureau involvement and community leadership. The Huberts raise tulips and other crops in Madison. As division winners, they will serve a one-year, ex-officio term on the Federation’s affiliated organization, the Alabama Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association, where they’ll see the policy development process firsthand and help guide research, promotion and education work. GULF SHORES — The future of agriculture in North Alabama is in good hands.

In fact, according to the head of the Alabama Farmers Federation’s Young Farmers Division, the area is “full of incredible young farmers.”

Seth and Kaylee Hubert of New Market and Russellville’s Tommy and Lauren Murray were among eight young farm families who won their divisions in the federation’s premier contest for agricultural producers.

The Huberts won the Fruit & Vegetable division and the Murrays were winners in the Soybeans division.

Federation Young Farmers Division Director Hunter McBrayer cited the applicants’ work — and work ethic.

“This state is full of incredible young farmers,” McBrayer said. “Applying for the OYFF or any of our contests makes those farmers sit down and track their growth from year one to now. It also helps them set goals for the future. That’s important in agriculture.

“This specific contest gets our younger, strong leaders even more involved in state-level work, too. It’s exciting to see the depth of talent we have in our pool of members.”

The OYFF contest is for young farmers ages 18-35 whose primary income is from production agriculture. Contestants completed an in-depth application charting Federation leadership, farm growth and community involvement.
