No injuries or hazardous materials involved in derailment at Aldridge Creek bridge

HUNTSVILLE – The Aldridge Creek Greenway remains closed after a train derailed Tuesday when the trestle bridge crossing the creek collapsed.

“Two railcars derailed and fell into Aldridge Creek as a result of the collapse,” the Huntsville & Madison County Railroad Authority said in a statement. “Importantly, there were no injuries, and the material contained within the railcars is not classified as hazardous.”

HMCRA said it is fully cooperating with the Federal Railroad Administration, which is investigating the incident.

As a safety precaution, the greenway in the vicinity of the Aldridge Creek Bridge has been closed to the public, the news release said.

“HMCRA and the City of Huntsville urge residents and visitors to respect all barriers and refrain from trespassing on railroad property,” the HMCRA said. “This area is considered an active federal investigation site, and unauthorized access is prohibited.”

No further information is available. HMCRA said updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and more details become available.
