Railroad bridge collapses in South Huntsville; Aldridge Creek Greenway section closed

HUNTSVILLE — The Huntsville & Madison County Railroad bridge over Aldridge Creek in South Huntsville has reportedly collapsed. There was at least one railroad car in the creek, reports said.

No one was injured.

In a Facebook post, the city said “A section of the Aldridge Creek Greenway connecting Green Cove Road to Hobbs Island Road is closed until further notice. Please be apprised there is no greenway access to Ditto Landing at this time.”

There was no other information immediately available. 256 Today reached out to Huntsville & Madison County Railroad Authority General Manager John Peek for comment.

Last July, the Huntsville & Madison County Railroad Authority was awarded a $1 million Consolidated Railroad Infrastructure and Safety Improvements grant to improve, update and upgrade its facilities.

At the time, MCRA Board Chair Mark Lumb said the grant will allow the replacement of the wooden Aldridge Creek Bridge with a concrete bridge.
