HUNTSVILLE – A winter storm may have delayed the ribbon-cutting for the STEM Center at Alabama A&M that will serve the students at Girls Inc., but it couldn’t stop the continued openings of the educational facilities that have come to the Tennessee Valley through nonprofit funding.

The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, in a partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority, has donated $1 million to each of 27 centers to be opened in TVA’s seven-state region.

The one opening on The Hill, where A&M’s campus is located in the community of Normal off Meridian Street, would be the third in North Alabama. The other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) centers in the region are in Sheffield and Ardmore.

Each center is equipped with six Chromebooks, a Tech Tub to safely store computers, a 3D printer, educational STEM products, a custom-designed curriculum tied to Next Generation Science Standards and other equipment.

  • What: Ribbon-cutting for Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation STEM Center
