HUNTSVILLE – It is going to be a red-hot Mardi Gras celebration at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center next week.

The facility is hosting a Molten Mardi Gras and guests will get a chance to design a handcrafted piece of molten art.

The event is Feb. 17 from 7-10 p.m. and features Cajun and Latin dance music by Mambo Gris Gris with a Cajun-themed spread of heavy hors d’ oeuvres under the Saturn V rocket.

The Rocket Center has partnered with Sloss Furnaces from Birmingham to provide each guest with a four-inch square sand mold into which they can carve their own designs.

The Sloss metal sculptors will fill the molds with molten scrap iron from an on-site 75-pound coke-fired furnace. Once cooled, the tiles are an upcycled work of art and a special keepsake.

It also makes a unique Valentine’s Day gift, and a memorable way to celebrate Mardi Gras.

Tickets to this fiery event are $60 for the public and $50 for Space Center members. Tickets include dancing, food and a tile sand mold per guest. A cash bar will also be available.
