Severe storms, heavy rain possible for the holiday weekend

HUNTSVILLE — Memorial Day Weekend will be marked with multiple rounds of storms, some of which may be strong to severe, the National Weather Service Huntsville office said today. The greatest threats will be hail, wind gusts, and localized heavy rainfall.

“Our greatest potential for severe weather will be a line of storms moving through Sunday night into Monday morning,” the office said. “Greatest threats with this round will be wind gusts, heavy rainfall, hail, and a tornado or two.”

For today, the office said clusters of showers or storms are forecast to increase in coverage and severity into the afternoon and evening hours.

The outlook for the weekend is a 30-50% of showers or storms through Sunday afternoon, resulting in ponding of water in areas of poor drainage.
