HUNTSVILLE – The general election of 2024 is months away, but local voters can wade into the season Tuesday.
A special election is set to decide who’ll be the next District 10 representative in the Alabama House. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. To check polling locations, visit https://myinfo.alabamavotes.gov/voterview.
Madison City Councilman Teddy Powell, the Republican candidate, will face Democratic opponent Marilyn Lands.
The special election arose after Rep. David Cole pleaded guilty in August to voter fraud and resigned. Cole was ordered to serve 60 days in jail followed by three months probation.

District 10 incorporates areas of Huntsville west of Memorial Parkway and south of Martin Road. It also includes Redstone Arsenal, the Triana community, and areas south of I-565 and east of County Line Road in Madison County.
Lands has been endorsed by Ball, a former police investigator who pushed the state’s medical marijuana law into effect. She’s also endorsed by Civil Rights icon and former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones.
Powell has garnered endorsements from two of Alabama’s biggest organizations: Alabama Farmers Association and the Business Council of Alabama.
Lands lost to Cole in 2022 but received 45% of the vote.
