TARCOG hosting Fraud & Scam Summit for seniors

HUNTSVILLE — One of the most targeted groups for fraud and scams are the elderly with reported incidents against that segment of the population increasing last year.

Elder fraud reports to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center rose by 14% in 2023, part of the reason TARCOG wants to help the community learn about the most common scams and how to outsmart fraudsters at its upcoming Fraud & Scam Summit 2024.

The summit is Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bob Harrison Wellness and Advocacy Center, 6156 Pulaski Pike, Huntsville. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

According to a news release from TARCOG (Top of Alabama Regional Council On Governments), anyone interested in attending should call 256-830-0818 to request a seat at the free event. Seating is limited to 150.

The Senior Medicare Patrol at TARCOG empowers and assists Medicare beneficiaries their families and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors and abuse.

The summit will also provide an overview of scams and fraud in Alabama and cover topics like:
• Cyber security
• Financial scams
• Consumer fraud
• Legal implications

In addition, exhibitors from state programs, community partners, nonprofit and community organizations and area businesses in the TARCOG region from DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall counties will be there to share educational information and valuable resources to attendees.
