UNA Planetarium delves into mystery of Christmas sky

(University of North Alabama contributed)

FLORENCE — Have you ever gone outside and tried to find the Christmas Star on Christmas night? Is it the brightest star? Which direction should you look? Do you ever wonder how the Wise Men were able to follow it to Bethlehem?

UNA Planetarium will attempt to answer those questions this weekend during its annual Christmas program. The program consists of a video presentation of “Mystery of the Christmas Star” and a planetarium astronomical tour of “The Sky Tonight.”

“Mystery of the Christmas Star”

This video presentation by Evans and Sutherland discusses what the Christmas star might have been. Starting with determining when the events of Jesus’ birth as described in the Bible happened and who the Wise Men might have been, the video then discusses the astronomical objects that might have motivated the Magi to travel a dangerous path through the desert. The video is intended for all audiences.

“The Sky Tonight”

This is a staple at UNA Planetarium and features a live 25-minute discussion of what constellations and planets are visible in the evening sky, as well as any astronomical events that are coming up. The staff invites questions at the end.

The cost for this holiday program is $5 per person, with free admission for UNA students, faculty, and staff. Payment is at the door. The full event lasts about 85 minutes.
